As every person is different and their experiences with addiction are also different no two people can expect their stay in a drug and alcohol rehab centre to be the same.
Some people may prefer to not stay in the rehab at all and to receive all of their treatments through an outpatient service or a support group such as narcotics anonymous or narcotics anonymous.
Others may only want to have a short stay and to get the most important treatments done and out of the way as quickly as possible.
However, most people prefer to take full advantage of the treatments and facilities available in the drug and alcohol rehab centre. Therefore, they often stay for all of the treatments, which can cause them to stay residential at the rehab centre for around 28 to 30 days.
This time away can give them a chance to reset their bodies and learn how to avoid triggers for their cravings when they leave the rehab centre.
With a longer stay, you are able to work through the main treatments, which are:
Detox
Detox is a process that allows your body to naturally rid itself of all toxins in your system, including all drugs and alcohol. This takes around ten days to fully complete, and you will be monitored by a team of medical professionals every step of the way.
They are there to ensure that you are perfectly safe throughout the detoxification process and to provide you with medication to relieve the withdrawal symptoms should they become too overwhelming.
Therapy
Therapy is designed to help you to unpack the route cause behind your addiction and to help you to identify what triggers your cravings so that you can learn how to avoid them.
You will also learn how to replace your substance abuse with healthier coping mechanisms. This will take up the majority of your time, as unpacking mental health issues can be a long and difficult process that requires you to work closely with a therapist.
You may also want to stay with the same rehab for aftercare services that can be done through outpatient and can be available for up to a year after you have completed your treatments.
Your time at rehab is supposed to work for you. Staying as long as you need or even returning multiple times due to a relapse or to prevent a relapse is perfectly normal. However, the journey to long-term recovery can last your entire life, so you should be prepared for the fact that your work in a drug and alcohol rehab centre won’t be completed overnight.

Is there a maximum amount of time you can stay in rehab?
In many drug and alcohol rehab centres, there is a limit on how long you can stay at the facility.
This is often due to the availability they have and if allowing you to stay would prove detrimental to your recovery or not.
You must remember that the goal of any rehab centre is to enable you to live a normal life outside of the rehab facility. By allowing you to stay forever, all you are doing is halting the amount of progress you can make.

A short stay
We understand at Addiction Advocates that not everyone has the ability to put their lives on hold for a month in order to get healthy. Some people also don’t need this upheaval in their life and carry on working or contributing to family life whilst getting treatment.
The amount of time you stay in a drug and alcohol rehab centre tends to come from the severity of your addiction and the state of your mental health.
For example, a heroin addict who has experienced large amounts of trauma in their past will need longer and more intensive treatment than someone with, say, a cannabis addiction which is self-medicating their anxiety.
As soon as the rehab staff are able to understand what is causing your addiction, they can help you to address the problems.
You can stay in the rehab centre as long as you want. Some people stay on for the detox to allow them to safely quit without worrying about withdrawal symptoms.
Some people, however, are addicted to types of drugs that don’t require a detoxification process to be safely overcome. And if you are addicted to a drug like this, you can find your stay at the rehab centre much quicker and potentially easier than others.
It is important that you don’t try to rush your stay just because you want a short stay. Your treatments to be successful will take however long they take, be this a week or a month.
Do I reduce the chance of relapse with a longer stay?
It has been found that a longer stay in a drug and alcohol rehab centre can lead to a more successful recovery journey.
You can think of it this way.
The more time you spend in rehab, the more support you receive and the tools you learn to help you to manage your addiction in the long run. With a longer stay, you can try out different types of therapy to find one that may be best to help you to avoid a relapse.
Addiction recovery is very difficult. So the longer you can have people helping you, the better and the less likely you are to isolate yourself from others that can also support you when you are finished with rehab.
If you are concerned about replacing your rehab centre will be able to refer you to a local support group to give you access to the round-the-clock support you would have gotten used to.
You will be alright. Rehab can help you to take back control of your life and to start really living it.
